It's interesting how CMGI price has gone up and up since it got hold of Alta Vista from COMPAQ and COMPAQ's has gone down and down since it sold Alta Vista.

As a COMPAQ shareholder I could become enthused about the 17% holding in CMGI if I intended to hold COMPAQ for 12-24 months until COMPAQ will be in a position to manipulate the CMGI holding to increase COMPAQ's share value - but for anyone with a shorter investment horizon - and I would guess that was most current investors in COMPAQ - the CMGI price is academic.

What will move the COMPAQ share price in the way most of us want it moved?

1. Strong earnings and any news such as partnerships, sales data, new killer applications etc which will encourage the market to believe that earnings will be good in the future.

2. Upgrades from large brokerage houses.

I doubt that the price of the CMGI shares will affect anyone's judgement in favour of COMPAQ for at least another 12 months and it will be a minor footnote in most analyst's assessments. The floatation of Alta Vista and with it the probable increase in COMPAQ's 17% holdings of it might make some contribution to a halo effect around COMPAQ in the Spring/Summer 2000 depending on any lock-up period restricting COMPAQ from selling the shares for a specified time. Hoepfully, it will not be the same onerous 12-18 month lock up which is involved in the CMGI deal.
