John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The world is condemned already under the first Adam, Colleen. Next verse:

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Colleen, the whole world became condemned in the fall of Adam. The covenant of works by which only Jesus managed to fulfil. All the rest of mankind died under that covenant in Adam.
If we are judged by our works we will perish in either/both the original sin of Adam and our own sin.

Jesus told the religious system of the day that they would not be saved because they failed to see both covenants as Moses saw.

John 5:45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

They were trusting that the covenant of works given by Moses would save them and they denied even needing to be saved. They denied being sinful. They would be lost under the covenant of works.

Yet Moses did not see but one covenant but was himself saved by Jesus in the covenant of grace and faith.

2 Corinthians 3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.

John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.

Moses wrote about Jesus Colleen but these men could only see the covenant of Works and where condemned by that very Law they trusted to save them. look:

Romans 10:3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

Jesus did not NEED to condemn the world.. it was condemned in the first Adam. As it is written:

1Cor 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
