We'll probably not see much investigation into this practice as long as the share price keeps moving higher since contented investors don't usually complain much. But watch what happens when the share price feels the effects of gravity: All eyes will be searching for explanations, and an inappropriately compensated workforce is as good a place to point the finger of blame as any.

There's nothing like a falling stock price to augment the diligence of investors. They're losing money and they're mad as hell. I doubt they'll feel charitable toward those who have successfully shielded themselves from the downturn. It's tough enough to bleed, but watching others get fat from your misfortune is even tougher.
