More on handsets and service. Available now??!! <GMPCS will be selling the Globalstar dual mode phones for $1,495. Cost of a phone call within the USA footprint to anywhere in the world will run $1.39 to $1.69 depending on your service plan. Cost of calls originating outside of the USA will be more expensive but are expected to be less than $3.00 per minute. Detailed pricing plans will be available later this year.

When does service start?
Commercial service is now available. During "soft launch," which is expected to run until February 2000, customers will receive a 50% discount on satellite air time. During the soft launch period there is a possibilty that there will be periods of service interruption while the Globalstar satellite constellation and hub stations are fine tuned. GMPCS expects to have operational demo units available late this year, but has targeted February 1st as a start date for commercial service.
