The backend message database is still NT/SQL server, unfortunately, and that's what the problems are.
---

If the backend is still NT/SQL (I'd heard differently, but I'm willing to admit it may be otherwise) then I sincerely doubt the problem has anything to do with SQL Server.

Take a look at some of the published benchmarks (TPC-C, SAP R/3, Baan, etc.). Or some of the SQL Server case studies. SI is busy, but SQL Server has been proven to handle significantly higher loads without a problem.

As you probably know, there are many issues when working with a db (your schema, for a starter) that can have much more impact on performance than the underlying db.

microsoft.com is a good place to see some benchmarks if you're interested.
