NSM.. earnings play up 11% on more than double average volume. As the week comes to the end, the earnings plays once again were strong. It helps when there are so many stocks that move daily from the 'most up' list to the 'most down' list. At least with earnings plays once anticipation starts it usually lasts more than 1 day and even if it sags, its usually not more than a few points and will not spike up one day and down the next (before earnings, after earnings anything can happen)..
Natsemi Profits Rise on Strong Analog Sales By Duncan Martell
Palo Alto, Calif. (Reuters) - National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:NSM - news), one of the largest makers of chips for cellular phones and wireless devices, on Thursday posted stronger-than-expected quarterly profits and cited gains in orders and sales in its analog chip business.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based National Semi said it earned $70.4 million, or 37 cents a share, for its fiscal second quarter ended Nov. 28, excluding net one-time, after-tax gains of $21.6 million. That compared with a year-ago loss of $48.6 million, or 29 cents, excluding one-time items. According to First Call/Thomson Financial, the Wall Street consensus estimate was for a profit of 27 cents in the latest quarter.
The results ended six money-losing quarters for the venerable Silicon Valley chipmaker. National is also benefiting from strong growth in cell phones, wireless technology, an overall rebound in semiconductor sales, as well as continued cost cuts. For example, worldwide sales of chips jumped 23 percent in October to a record, fueled by demand for Internet equipment and cellular phones, the Semiconductor Industry Association said on Thursday. |
