(Nasdaq:SLMD) announced today that it plans to enter the wireless clinical messaging market and that it has a pending FDA 510(k) clearance application for the new Ultraview Clinical Messenger(TM), a multiparameter waveform pager system. The Ultraview Clinical Messenger is designed to work in conjunction with the Ultraview Care Network(TM) by providing supplementary alarm notification to the mobile caregiver and automatically displaying desired waveforms and associated vital signs for any monitored parameter. Product Development Vice President Roy Hays stated, "We are very excited about the Ultraview Clinical Messenger, which will help caregivers stay in contact with their patients while moving around the unit. Our customers have expressed the need for this flexibility to help them respond to the increasing demands placed on caregivers." He also noted, "With the power of the Ultraview Care Network's open-standards design, we are able to rapidly develop and seek regulatory clearance for innovative products such as this in a relatively short period of time." Upon 510(k) clearance this product will represent Spacelabs' entree into the virtually untapped wireless clinical messaging market. The Ultraview Clinical Messenger is designed to compete with other waveform paging systems such as those from Data Critical Corporation (Nasdaq:DCCA). The new Ultraview Clinical Messenger uses easy-to-acquire, off-the-shelf paging hardware with a relatively favorable cost of ownership. It also includes an easy-to-use management tool, which is intended to allow clinicians to assign patients and pagers to caregivers. This Windows-based management tool may be accessed via a standard PC workstation, or directly on a Spacelabs Ultraview 1700 or Universal Clinical Workstation (UCW(R)) bedside or central monitor equipped with the space-saving WinDNA(R) feature. The Ultraview Clinical Messenger represents the latest innovation in Spacelabs' line of wireless medical products, which originated when the company helped design the first systems to monitor astronauts in space. Spacelabs is a leading provider of integrated healthcare information systems and medical instrumentation. Until 510(k) clearance is obtained, the Company is not commercially distributing or accepting orders for the Ultraview Clinical Messenger. Statements made in this press release that are not based on historical facts are forward-looking statements subject to uncertainty and risk. Those risks include the possible failure to achieve product development objectives, uncertain product demand and acceptance, uncertain market size, the possible proliferation of unanticipated competition, delays or failures to obtain regulatory clearances, and other risks detailed in the Company's securities filings.
