Stream(ing) Machines (.. or S&M)

streammachine.com

Surprised you folks missed that one, or has the compression party moved to another forum ?

Interesting that former S3 executives run both S&M and iC (pronounced "ick"? -- iCompression). Perhaps that's a sign of the times: encoder business is like the washed-out & commoditized graphics controller market.

I suppose S&M will get the WebTV Digital VCR contract since they are the only ones confident enough to boast about their 2 mbit/sec performance in public. The bar has been lowered folks, thanks to the "number of hours of video storage" benchmark. Analogy: consumers judge PC's by the MHz.

And where is the Philips/WebTV/Echostar 7200 with the 17 GB hard disk and analog-to-MPEG-2 capture feature ? I think it is a cool product, but a bit pricey ($500).

No, Bellcore didn't write the MPEG-2 spec. S&M got some VLSI folks. (also, remember the company was founded by "So, long Chen" of Futletel fame, now VWeb). The video brains behind Bellcore went to Cube (that French guy -- Messier Hulot?) and the U. of Washington (M.-T. Sun). Bellcore has a small and obvious patent floating in the pool. (the scene from Caddyshack comes to mind :-)
