Re: Intel will demo a 1GHz IA-32 room temp processor at ISSCC in Feb...

The Intel .18 process has been shipping for desktop processors (on press release, at least) since October, 25. They will demo a 1000MHZ part next February. AMD has been shipping .18 parts for about 2 weeks - and they demoed a 900MHZ part in November.

I'd say the situation is continuing to follow PB's prediction: Rough parity between the companies in clock speed and performance - with coppermine using expensive Rambus and full speed, on die L2 cache and Athlon using cheap memory and slow (but expensive) off cache L2.

If this situation continues, AMD will be able to make substantial profits in the coming quarters (and Intel won't do badly, either).

Regards,

Dan
