Jim,

Great post. One of the things that I think I see is the unbelievable presence of IBM with regards to eBusiness infrastructure (meaning web enabling heretofore monolithic apps). Many of my larger customers have re-entered the fold and become IBM devotees for modernizing their business functions. They've really reinvented themselves, along the lines of Arthur Andersen and EDS.

So from one perspective I'm not sure I do see the old Blue creeping back. On the other hand, you have to wonder how much of the old corporate culture did go underground until the fiscal crises were over. They're still pumping out a tremendous amount of new intellectual property, easily #1 in the US for patents applied for and received. The big question is how do they unlock the value of that property.

Certainly they're trying new strategies, ala the Dell deal, but are they giving away the store at fire sale prices to bolster near term performance? Tough to say. IMHO they are looking good long term ... Only time will tell.
