Good article, Rusty. I noticed the ham-fisted effort when the news broke, but after Orrin Hatch and Henry Hyde, heads of the relevant Congressional committees, went on record against it, I shrugged it off too.

Dream Team Stumbles

Political insiders are left to wonder where the hell Microsoft's legislative dream team was when this cockeyed plot was hatched. After all, Microsoft has hired some of the heaviest hitters in town, including former Christian Coalition director Ralph Reed, former National Republican Committee chief Haley Barbour and former Democratic congressmen Vic Fazio and Thomas J. Downey. Any of these guys could have seen this one coming and stopped it. But no one did.

Whatever the excuse, one cannot help but suspect that the overreaching maneuvers exhibited here are emblematic of a much deeper problem at Microsoft.

Offhand, I'd guess Microsoft's legislative dream team has the same problem as Microsoft's legal dream team. They're all taking orders from the top. It's hard to tell the richest man in the world that maybe he doesn't know everything about everything.

Cheers, Dan.
