SUZHOU (Dec. 10) XINHUA - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) from the United States, a global supplier of integrated circuits for the personal and network computer and communication markets, today announced the official operation of a factory in Suzhou City in east China's Jiangsu Province.
AMD's Suzhou factory, with total investment of 108 million U.S. dollars, 363 staff members, and 59,000 square meters of floor space, is mainly involved in testing, marking and packing of integrated circuit chips.
Construction of the factory started in 1996 and trial operation began in January this year.
With the most advanced technology and equipment, the factory now can pack 550,000 chips and test 750,000 per week, and all of its products are for export.
By 2000, the factory will be able to pack 1.375 million chips and test 1.7 million a week. It is expected to produce 6.5 million chips weekly when in full operation.
Richard Previte, vice-chairman of AMD, said at today's ceremony that AMD was attracted by the convenient communication, complete telecommunication facilities and a large supply of skillful workers in Suzhou, as well as the many famous universities and institutes in Jiangsu.
AMD reported a turnover of 2.5 billion U.S. dollars in 1998, with half coming from markets outside the United States. It established its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong in 1982. It has had offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen since 1982. Enditem 10/12/99 12:47 GMT
