Those are good questions.

I don't think that IDX is selling last year's product into this year's market, because I don't think the market has caught the idea of biometrics yet. My take is that IDX, by dealing with MOT and, to much lesser degrees, ENTU and NOVL, is trying to prepare for the future.

What seemed more apt in the article were the points that (1) engineering something great means nothing if you don't actually sell it; (2) selling it means explaining to people that don't know anything about your product that they need it (I think IDX is particularly weak here); and (3) that as a company grows, a job can outgrow the person holding it even though the title remains the same.
