Lizze (sort of off-topic):

I've been monitoring Linux for years, first tried it with RH 4.2, then 5.0, and now 6.1. As far as I can tell the "core" of Linux is the code written and overseen by Linus himself. So the locking, etc. is basically the same as long as you're on the same underlying rev. of the OS. There was a major shift up in these mechanisms across the RH 5.0 to 6.x boundary, which was widely anticipated. Thus, for example, some of the software that used to work on 5.0 no longer runs on 6.x thanks to upgrades in the GNU libraries. Over the years major rework has been done to support multi-processor systems, copy-on-write virtual memory, threading, etc., etc. So the real differences are seen as the core evolves into a mature offering, not between different bundles e.g. Caldera, Mandrake, RH.
