think twice about using a market order to sell short.

That's a really good point I didn't consider. I was fortunate. A quickly collapsing stock could easily bottom before an uptick.

So I would surmise the correct alternate would be to set a limit price that may not be right at the current market but a price that one would still be willing to go short and if the market hadn't hit that yet then one would receive the higher price.
