And could have bought a book that would tell her in pictures and steps exactly what to do and how to do it so simply that even a mechanical idiot could do it. That would drop her savings from $200 down to $180, but of course she saves the same $200 on every future repair.

Plumbing used to scare me. Then I realized that I can do most of the simple stuff myself. I haven't yet replaced a toilet, because of the major downside if you do it wrong, but valves and stuff like that are childs play if you have the right book and supplies. And there is a major sense of independence knowing that if things go out on a Sunday morning you're not at the mercy of some jerk who was up drinking until 2:00 the night before.
