My general opinion about LINUX is that it has a lot of growing up to do - weak administration model. lots of stuff is not supported, SMP support is poor - but that's part of the price you pay for a "following the tail-lights" design strategy. It's amazing that a pretty good OS got written essentially as a hobby. I don't see LINUX imposing on the big Unix environments like Solaris any time soon.

The neat thing about LINUX aside from the whole open development model (which I think would be a hard act to repeat for any other big development) is the attitude in the development community that it uncovered. I got into the business when it was pretty much a requirement to do your own OS and back in the early 80s I wrote 3 dedicated realtime multitasking OS products, all for specialized environments. It was a lot of fun but the advent of Unix, with the model that you could take a basic kernel and utilities base and do your own thing with some assurance that new stuff could be incorporated down the road, made me a convert. Linux today is a lot like early Unix, and the newer generation of programmers and systems developers is reacting partly to the FREEDOM that they had almost forgotten they could have...
