<<I appreciate the thought, Lizzie. What actually will happen if we burn the rugs or ban
their import? Do you think the youngsters will then be free to spend the day with milk
and cookies, watching Barney and Tinky Winky? Probably not.

Would you favor burning all the art in the Louvre if you discovered it had been
produced by children working in inhumane conditions?

Would you favor the destruction of historical monuments, temples and ruins if slave
labor was used in their construction?>>

Michael, if EVERYONE was repulsed by the thought of small children being permanently crippled by working in the rug factories, there would soon be no market at all for the rugs, and these countries would institute some sort of certification/labelling process where they were made in a way that did not involve child labor. Boycotts are effective, as Nike found out when many people would no longer purchase its shoes because of slave labor conditions in the factories. Nike is still in business, but certainly its reputation has been damaged. And from the serious intent of the groups in Seattle, there will be more attention given to labor abuses in the future, not less.

Looking at art which was made in the past, or seeing ancient historical monuments, is a different situation. The damage has already been done; refusing to visit or enjoy these treasures will not help human beings who are being mistreated today.
