Liberal - conservative -- doesn't much matter as long as parties agree that facts as well as feelings have merit. I suppose most close friends are conservative - some definitely not.

Country Joe might argue cases very effectively. Strikes me as someone who might favor the cause over the client though.

I have had my share of court "fun". I am undefeated (with one tie) representing myself. Once, thinking I might be in over my head, I hired a top attorney in the field of interest. What an absolute joke! Cost me a LOT of money and, in retrospect, I am certain I could have destroyed the other side. I recently had a slam dunk personal injury claim that caused much drooling in the personal injury industry.

I did the whole thing myself and when I had gotten the insurance company within 60 percent of what I thought it was worth, I gave the file to a guy with a rep. of being a meanie. I said, no contingency - I'll go $400 an hour for five hours max - if you can't do it, I don't want you, anyway. Week later I got a check for 100 percent of objective.

Having gone this far, I must say I think the legal/justice system in this country is in far more urgent need of reform than the health-care system or the IRS. It doesn't need to be a mystery and "manners of the court" are vestiges of less democratic times. Thank God for law libraries and the right to observe trials.

FWIW, I have several life-long friends and more than a couple of close relatives among the arguing and judging classes.
