Hi Edwarda... let me put my 2½ in here....

Contrary to popular belief, I think the direct-seller dot coms are squeezing the large chain retailers in many industries, and this will allowing the individual mom-and-pop nichey stores to regain a foothold, at the expense of the chains. The book mkt is the most advanced and although there is a brouhaha over the individual bookstores being pushed out of business by Amazon, in fact I think the cost cutting on the part of B&N and Borders to compete with amzn is really killing the little guys. Large chain b&m operations were sort of step #1 in the efficiency cycle, where they could do things cheaper by buying in bulk etc. but they have been upstaged by the direct model... it is the individual stores that will remain because their advantage is being accentuated by the direct model. So this is actually good. I don't care about rite-aid or these chain drugstores, if drugstore.com supecedes them thats fine with me.

The dot coms have added value in some markets like books where the entire mkt pie has actually been increased, the chains never did that. I know the wine industry is happy to work with the online wine vendors because they see it as another one of these "grow the pie" things. Well thats my view of the world anyway, fwiw.
