Bohdan, thanks again for the reply. I did not think my general question was off-subject in any way because of the numerous references to the effects of shorting throughout the history of this thread. I tend to agree that the brokerage which did the borrowing of the shares which were shorted would remain liable for the replacement of those shares; therefore, the money received from the short sale likely remains in the liabilities column of the brokerage's account and is not available to the shorter until the shares are returned.

I enjoyed your joke implying I was a shorter because of my interest in getting an answer to this question. No, I was very long and have a big paper loss (didn't sell).
