It's really quite simple.

1) If the DOJ has an airtight case MSFT will realize this and be forced to settle. The stock price will climb on the news without a doubt.

2) If the DOJ can't win then MSFT will continue to make money hand over fist and people won't care if they settle. MSFT will do whatever it takes to get their stock price moving, so shareholders/employees will stick with the company while they fight to the death.

Point is, I believe MSFT is wise enough to take whatever course of action is necessary to enrich themselves and their shareholders.

I do not envision a scenario where MSFT lets their stock price languish while they fight it out in court for years on end. If they are going to fight, they will take steps to get their stock moving. If they are going to settle, the stock price will take care of itself.
