<<In fact, as many people age they become less materialistic because they want
simpler lives with fewer possessions to maintain. Many aging people move to
smaller houses or apartments, and get rid of a lot of the things that need dusting.

I understand up front this is what you've gathered from your own experiences, but I sure
wish someone would tell my 77 year old antique buy and sell mother-in-law that older
people stop accumulating and start un-accumulating. She gives us the crap she can't sell
to make room for more "stuff".>>

Well, there are certainly exceptions to the general premise that people lighten up as they get older. Some people have so much stuff that they can not deal with it at all, maybe because there are so memories attached to it, and some people want to be surrounded by their memories. I also know from my own experience that it is easy to get into the habit of distracting myself from things in my life that I don't want to deal with by shopping. It sounds pathetic, but being able to buy things makes some people feel like they are in control of their lives when in reality they may be pretty lost.

I hope you don't have to support this woman! Is she at all nice and kind, aside from her obvious problems?
