Regarding older folks giving their possessions away, I've heard there is some psychological motivation behind doing so. It has something to do with the idea that the older people know they're reaching a point in their lives where their days are numbered, but to be honest I really don't remember much about it.

My mother-in-law doesn't strike me as displaying in any way shape or form that at 77 she is going to be going away any time soon (nor would I want it thought I'd like to see her do so).

I've never been one to buy ornamental items: figurines, pictures, things of a decorating nature. I prefer to buy things which are of use and used with more frequency than a fake christmas tree. Maybe its a gender related thing.

Jane, SJ's mother, is a nice person. I've never had much of the "mother-in-law" problem which is so often joked about, although there are some things she does which irritate me from time to time.

I'm worried that she now has a larger lump sum of money at her disposal, and she will mistakenly become optimistic about her health as she gets older. Buying a new car, while nice (must be as I've never had one), doesn't suggest to me a person who is thinking longer term. While it might seem none of my business to be concerned about what she does with money which is rightfully her's, I doubt it will be SJ's only other sibling sister which will contribute any means to Jane's care should such a situation arise.

She is thinking short-term CD's as an investment vehicle. Take a wild guess why I'm concerned so much.
