I think it's ridiculous to strike a child who is "attempting to pull something hot off the stove." All you have to do is turn the handles of the pots inward, and the child can't reach them. If a little child tries to touch things that are harmful, all you need to do is pick him or her up, and give the child a hug, and say, "No, no, mustn't do, fire is hot, and will hurt the baby." If the child is too young to understand that, it's too young to make the correlation between hitting and hot stoves, either. Put a child barrier so the child can't come into the kitchen. I had a room set up next to the kitchen that was completely child-proof, and my children played in it while I was in the kitchen. When they were younger than that, I set them in a walker, which has bumpers around it so they can't grab anything, or waited until they needed a nap.
