That's the name of the game, as far as I'm concerned. Get filthy rich, then use superior screening/research to give the bucks away where they'll have lasting impact.

Most of the granting agencies are highly flawed. Trusts can be very good, but politics can even reach to those pure levels. I was funded, first postdoc, by Cancer Research Institute, Inc. Highly competitive, because support was set at the level that the sponsor requested. Unfortunately, my sponsor didn't want me to make more than the NIH postdocs in the lab. <sad smilie>

CRI was about as good as it gets. Don't know if it's still that way, now that they've grown. However, those who want to give away money -- and do it such that it hits home -- should study the old ways at CRI, Inc.

The nickel and dime donations to agencies like ACS? Largely wasted, IMO.
