NOVAK: Sir, Federal Reserve Chairman Greenspan has said everything is going to be OK in the global financial markets. Now Robert Mondell (ph), this year's Nobel Laureate, has suggested that currencies be fixed to gold at least temporarily to avoid these fluctuations and the sky (ph)-sided Guilanisky (ph) who I know you talked to -- has a column running "The Washington Times" this weekend that says same thing.

After the US went off the gold standard, I was delighted I'd never again have to try to wrap my head around that issue. Now they have to go and bring it up again!

In recent articles on Mondell's comments, it doesn't look like he was referring to the Y2K bug. He seems interested in taming the currency markets in general and propping up the euro in particular. I don't find any basis for the connection Senator Bennett made to Y2K computer problems. The alleged Washington Times article is not available on their site. Maybe the connection was made there.

The Iridium phone is a parody on the keys to the executive wash room, imho. Consolation prize for a reserved seat in the "bunker." <g>
