When my mother and dad came to the point in time where some type of supervised care was needed, they went back into my grandparent's home and found all sorts of things which responsible people would not (or it seems to me) do. They found uncashed reimbursement checks from medical insurers amounting to thousands of dollars which had been laid down and simply forgotten.

I do not remember if you were posting on this thread while I and a friend were dealing with "the house from hell." We found the same thing. Uncashed checks, stock certificates mixed in with underwear, money everywhere. Things had simply gotten to be too much for the woman and she literally forgot. Yet it requires enormous tact to take over any part of an elderly person's affairs; even the attempt is a frightening suggestion that they are losing control of their own lives. At the end of a long life of responsibilities, the suggestion alone is an affront.
