***Globalstar sold a phone!*** Good for you Michael! You've been on the case for years and now have a real, live phone! How exciting. It all seemed so easy too. That's the story. Didn't even need to go near a shop. Just order on the Web.
Ordered Friday and received Saturday!!! Heck, that is seriously prompt marketing.
A lot of houses in the USA [and elsewhere] have not much between the people and the sky. They have some paint coating, some inner layer, some insulation, some 3/4inch chipboard, some bituminous tiles, or wooden tiles etc and that's all. With satellites pretty much overhead, most of the signal would just go right through and the satellite would see the handset without trouble. Maybe the signal travelled like that rather than through the windows. The walls too are flimsy.
But you won't be using it in Hawaii! Well, not in Globalstar mode, but terrestrial cdmaOne should be fine. That's because there isn't a gateway in Hawaii and the satellites can't reach from Hawaii to the mainland.
You might not be able to use it in London either if the Europeans aren't handling roaming yet, though by end of January, they must be getting close. I don't even think the Caribbean is ready. I guess we'll soon know!
Good for you!

PS: Jon, you were pretty quickly on the case - only four hours after Michael, on a Sunday morning! You'll need to send him more than $5! At $1.70 per minute, you'll be burning up $50 before you know it. Anyway, you could phone him. Find out what the cost is in that direction. Give your long distance supplier a call and ask how much to phone a Globalstar phone - that should keep them busy for a while. |
