***IDC patent payment*** Yes Harvey, Qualcomm paid Interdigital a few million $$ to get them to go away. The case was about to be heard by a judge and Qualcomm decided the risks of having an OJ decision and the delays to adoption of CDMA as customers wondered who owned the technology would not be worth it.

So IDC scored some money. Not really something they should be proud of - it's a bit like kidnapping a child, claiming it is your own offspring, and giving the child back for some payment when the parents figure they'd rather just have their child back NOW rather than go through courts, delays, criminal lawyer costs, and anguish.

It's amazing that that excellent company IDC hasn't got billions of phones out in use right now since they invented CDMA before Qualcomm and have got all sorts of associations with other companies.

Qualcomm owes Interdigital nothing! Interdigital has no patents Qualcomm needs. Interdigital doesn't have technology which can 'work around' Qualcomm. Nokia and others might pretend that they do so that they can delay GSM destruction and hold out false promise to service providers that a *new* CDMA will soon be coming without extorquerationate royalties of a third the GSM royalties. [5% for CDMA and 15% for GSM].

PS: Oddly enough, there is the real life case of the USA claiming the 6 year old Cuban boy is one of them while the father says the boy is his.

Unicom should be able to finance their cdmaOne buildout. Qualcomm has a lot of money, so does Lucent. Qualcomm has a handset division Unicom could use.
