Isn't it funny how just as you've almost reached a stage of financial security, something else comes along to threaten it? I have been having exactly the same experience recently, so I really understand your concerns about your mother-in-law and the fear that you will have to take care of here someday. I also understand what you are saying about CDs. The problem is that if you are old and make BAD investments, there may not be time to recoup. You and I have both been on the losing end of bad stock picks, Mike--imagine if you were in your late 70's when that happened!

When you have time (I respect your efforts to keep SI time under control) you might want to read this article in today's San Francisco Sunday paper discussing what we lose when we are all Starbucked. It also discusses what I would term unethical business practices of Wal-Mart and Home Depot, and what we lose when we become a seamless national consumer culture:
