The things you say volunteers do in your area, we have paid teachers to do here, for the most part. In our county, we've got teachers for the GT program, assistant teachers to bring down the student-teacher ratio, bus drivers for the field trips, etc. Libraries aren't "discretionary" here.

Yes, volunteers run the fund-raisers, but I'd rather give money directly to the PTA than buy stuff like giftwrap that costs three times what it costs at Walmart or Costco, or any of the other junk the PTA has the children sell. The parents usually buy the stuff, anyway.

And of course working parents are involved in volunteer activities, to the best of my knowledge the men who are Boy Scout leaders all have jobs, don't they? They certainly are here.
