William - here are some stats for Wal*Mart and
Barnes & Noble (BKS - the bricks & mortar one).
Note that data for WMT and BKS is for trailing
12 months ending Oct., 1999. Also note that
the $500 million loss for AMZN is a guess (just
as the $1.5b revenue number is that you provided)
- the actual AMZN loss may be higher.

My conclusion: yes, Amazon has more revenue per employee,
but not much. Profit per employee though - well, it's a
point to ponder.
