I am not clear why you would find it ironic that people against prop 13 would be in favor of "a thousand kinds of other housing subsidies such as public
housing assistance, rent control and the Mother of all of them -- the tax write-offs
associated with home ownership." Prop 13 stopped cash generation for all those other kinds of subsidies. If you like to play around with subsidies to socially engineer (and I think that is a very valid way to steer society) then of course you don't want the money turned off.

Prop 13 is not a very equitable redistribution of wealth. The wealth in this country is not concentrated in the young. Wealth coagulates in the older population. It seems to me people most able to pay for societal programs (and those who will benefit most from a stable society, because they have the most to lose) are people with property. So it makes all the sense in the world (following internal logic) that people who would be FOR property taxes would also be for subsidies of people unable to avoid housing (public assistance and renters)- because those people are seeking a redistribution of wealth from those with ample resources to those with minimal resources. I am for some programs that redistribute wealth and against others- I am concerned with driving behavior. Redistributions of wealth that appear to me to drive people to become more fully entrenched members of society, I support. Giveaways that make people irresponsible I do not support. As for the Tax write off associated with home ownership- I am for it but only up to a certain price house- I don't think (for example) a millionaire buying a mansion needs a tax write off- but I do think a person of modest income deserves one. Of course we'll give the millionaire the same small break the guy with the little suburban ranch house gets- he just can't have any more.
