Compaq, Samsung To Put $400M In Joint Tech Project Alpha

LONDON -- U.S. computer group Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) said Monday it's combining with Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (Q.SSE) to invest a further $400 million in Alpha, a joint technology project.

The $400 million is in addition to the $100 million Compaq recently said it would plow into Alpha's development of the Tru64 Unix system.

Samsung Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Daeje Chin added that the companies will invest in excess of $1.5 billion into Alpha over the next five years.

Alpha is a working project comprising Compaq, Samsung and Samsung's U.S. subsidiary Alpha Processor Inc.

The companies claim Alpha is the world's fastest 64-bit microprocessor. It's used to underpin the computer processing units made by Compaq.

Alpha was acquired as a business by Compaq from Digital Equipment in 1993.

Some $1 billion has already been invested by the companies into Alpha, said Jesse Lipcon, vice president of the Alpha Technology Division at Compaq in an interview.
