It is not only severity; it is also frequency. When one reads beyond the abstracts and digs into the samples, a lot of the studies are badly flawed, unfortunately. Few exclude children who have been abused, for example, and even fewer try to examine correlations with an eye toward the issue of frequency. I looked at one that did. The correlations with various emotional disorders in adulthood were markedly different between people who been spanked only rarely in childhood and those who had been spanked frequently.
