Pallisard, to clarify (and further expound):

The Valence workers I talked to in July at the N.I. plant told me that the assembly line guys were working 24 hours/day, and had been for a while. I said "three shifts per day" in my post for convenience, and to get the 24-hour point across--and because this is how I had remembered it.

But with the chance brewing that someone might actually think I was lying, I checked my notes from back then (which I hadn't looked at again since typing them on the plane during my return trip, and emailing to a couple friends the next day): Actually, it was TWO 12-HOUR assembly line crews.

Now, at first this struck me as: Oh no, they'll get tired and make mistakes. Then I thought about it another way: This way the company needed to train 33% fewer workers in this highly technical process.

You have now verified that they have simply hired more workers, and so are now working a more civilized schedule. This is, of course, good news for everyone--except maybe the guys who LIKED the extra pay for the 12-hour shifts!
