What are the development tools of today or tomorrow ?

If its java - progress has Apptivity. For Object Orientated with GUI then progress has smart objects.

For applications such as accounts and logistics I find a lot of companies dont actually want a lot of GUI overhead - let alone changing over to a new internet model. So I reckon even the 10 year old character based 4GL of progress still has a future.

My point is that I think progress are positioning themselves in a strong position by providing a complete development solution for the enterprise.

My impression of progress is that they are poor on marketing but instead rely on the quality of their products and the VAR channel. Hence the relation with the VARS need to be strong.

Perhaps one reason why VARS dont have a long term strategy from PROGRESS is that its hard to predict which standards are going to be adopted in the internet world. PROGRESS are perhaps trying to hedge their bets....

Which brings me back to my question - what are the dev tools of tomorrow ????

Is theres a company out there with a better product suite ?

Micosoft - Too PC orientated.
ORACLE - Expensive and complex.
Allaire - Internet only
etc .....

If anyone knows sure would like to invest in them :->
