This student stock tournament is such a crock.

There are 3 groups of participants: the extreme winners, the extreme losers, and the people in between.

The only ones who get the praise are the extreme winners. It makes no difference if you are mediocre or an extreme loser since no real money is at stake.

So what does this contest inspire? Swinging for the fences. Going for the long shot. Taking the most possible risk.

If you are right, then you might make the top of the list and get recognized. If you are wrong, so what. You don't really lose anything.

Evaluating a healthy risk/reward ratio will never put you at the top of the list so learning this is not rewarded.

So is CNBC really doing a service to these students? I think not.
