GSM will not do WWeb. Europe is all GSM. Ergo, GSM is Toast. Forget about GPRS [an interim half-baked solution] and EDGE [a con job vapourwear concept designed primarily to sustain the idea that GSM will lead somewhere useful in the long run and service providers should spend another $20bn upgrading their existing networks and capacity - that's what I think anyway].

VW40 [W-CDMA] was another attempt to keep the GSM victims in the GSM producers' clutches. That's been eroded to a weak clone of cdma2000 and still the specifications are not finalized. There is continuing pressure by service providers to make VW40 as close as possible to cdma2000. They know a hagfish trap when they see it.

GSM is toast!

When Nokia and Ericsson have both got their clutches of good CDMA technology, they'll go flat out to develop market share. That will accelerate the adoption of CDMA.

Qualcomm buying Nokia stock with the handset division will put Nokia on the fast track to WWeb development. That means they'll not stay mired in GSM - they'll keep it going as long as they can, but the CDMA part of Nokia will be going as fast as it can.

The whole process is accelerating. China is going to do a rush job of installing CDMA. HDR is being backed by Microsoft, Qualcomm and Korea Telecom Freetel.

Nokia won't want to be left behind. They'll be going flat out too.
