Comsat Peru Passes Commercial Service
Milestone With Netro Corporation And Lucent
Technologies Wireless Solution

For Past Six Months, Broadband Wireless Access System Overcomes
Bottleneck, Offering Advanced Services to Business Customers

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Netro Corporation (Nasdaq: NTRO - news), a
market leader in broadband wireless access systems, today announced that COMSAT Peru, a
wholly-owned subsidiary of COMSAT International, has completed six months of commercial
pilot operation of its AirStar(TM) broadband wireless equipment as part of a Lucent
Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) OnDemand(TM) network.

COMSAT's broadband wireless access network in Peru, which operates in the 10GHz and
26GHz frequency bands, is one of the first of its type in Latin America. For half a year it has
been successfully providing an array of on-demand voice, data, video and multimedia
capabilities such as Internet access, computer networking and video conferencing services.

Under their OEM (original equipment manufacturer) agreement, Lucent has integrated Netro's AirStar system and is responsible for deploying and maintaining COMSAT Peru's wireless broadband access network.

''Following our successful deployment in Europe, we moved our focus to Latin America, which
represents a large opportunity for Netro's TDMA packet-based solution,'' said Gideon
Ben-Efraim, president and CEO of Netro Corporation. ''Moreover, we believe that the small
and mid-sized business segment in Latin America is especially in need of high speed broadband
access services. We are very pleased to cooperate with COMSAT in the Latin American market,
working jointly with our partner Lucent.''

''COMSAT's new wireless point-to-multipoint service permits business customers to share a
secure broadband network. Lucent and Netro allowed COMSAT to quickly deploy and relieve the broadband access bottleneck for our customers,'' said Luis Alejos, general manager of COMSAT Peru. ''This is now the primary entry for our customers to the GlobalWaysm regional
and international network we recently announced. The Netro system and Lucent network expertise have played a major role in the execution of our strategy to provide corporate networking solutions. Using Netro's bandwidth-on-demand technology, we provide a more attractive solution, including local access, while bypassing traditional carrier systems and foregoing costly and time-consuming fiber cable installation.''

COMSAT Peru (COMSAT Peru, S.A.C.) is a wholly owned subsidiary of COMSAT
International. COMSAT International, a business unit of COMSAT Corporation (NYSE: CQ -
news), provides digital networking solutions with offices in Argentina, Brazil, China, Colombia,
Guatemala, India, Mexico, Peru, Russia, Turkey and Venezuela. COMSAT Corporation,
headquartered in Bethesda, Md., is a leading provider of global satellite services and digital
networking services, products, and technology.
