LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 13, 1999--

Cabletron Bolsters its Portfolio of Cable Solutions

With Comprehensive Management, VPN and Content Hosting Services

Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS) today announced that it has strengthened its existing portfolio of cable solutions to help Multiple System Operators (MSOs) deliver a full range of high-speed, low-cost services on demand.

As standards evolve in the cable industry, MSOs - like traditional and next-generation service providers - are offering their customers bandwidth-intensive digital services such as Internet access, video-conferencing, video-on-demand and IP-based voice. Cabletron's expanded Packet-over-Cable program is an integral part of the company's service provider focus, and its stated commitment to offer service providers standards-based, reliable, secure and affordable solutions.

"The availability of digital services provides the cable industry with significant revenue-generating opportunities, as they expand their offerings from traditional cable programming to include data, voice and video-on-demand," explained Greg Goetz, Cabletron's director of broadband programs. "MSOs will look to vendors like Cabletron - with our end-to-end selection of secure, cost-effective, high-performance solutions - to help them deploy these next-generation services."

Yankee Group analyst Matthew Davis emphasizes the importance of proactive management and scalability in this market. "MSOs need to differentiate themselves from their competitors, and an effective way to accomplish this is through an advanced management platform like SPECTRUM that can dynamically view and manage a growing number of products and services, enabling MSOs to offer stronger service level agreements."

Davis continued, "Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router, with its application-aware routing, integrated load balancing and built-in VPN capability, provides the reliability and security demanded by today's cable operators."

Affordable, Reliable, Turn-Key Cable Solutions

Cabletron's enhanced Packet-over-Cable portfolio features the award-winning, Layer 3/4, wire-speed SmartSwitch Router (SSR) 2000, 8000 and 8600 for content hosting, bandwidth provisioning and future support for integrated cable modem termination. Cabletron's VPN-enabled SSR 600, SSR 245 and SSR 265 provide flexible, scalable, secure access to telecommuters, branch sites and remote business partners, and support IP routing, network address translation and dynamic host configuration. Embedded security services lower operational and equipment costs.

Cabletron's Packet-over-Cable infrastructure is managed by SPECTRUM's Cable Management solutions. SPECTRUM can help MSOs guarantee service availability and lower their operational costs via advanced accounting and billing applications that enable them to track bandwidth usage and bill accordingly.

Pricing and Availability

MSOs can choose individual packages or the entire service offering from the Packet-over-Cable program, which is also fully supported by Cabletron's global, professional services organization.
