Oracle, SCO and Unisys Set New World Record TPC-C Result on 8-CPU Intel-Based Servers December 13, 1999 7:38 PM EST
41,085.4 Transactions Per Minute Achieved at a Cost of $37.19/tpmC On The TPC-C Benchmark, Outperforming All Other 8-CPU Results on Intel-Based Servers REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., SANTA CRUZ, Calif., and BLUE BELL, Pa., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL), SCO (Nasdaq: SCOC), and Unisys (NYSE: UIS) today announced a new world record TPC-C result on 8-CPU Intel architecture. Using the industry standard TPC-C workload, this world record benchmark was achieved by running the Oracle8i(TM) database on the Unisys e-@ction ES2085R Enterprise Server combined with the UnixWare(R) 7 operating system. This benchmark clearly demonstrates the highest result ever on an 8-CPU system using Intel(R) Pentium(R) III Xeon(TM) processors. Outperforming all other 8-CPU results on Intel-based servers, Oracle, SCO and Unisys achieved world record results of 41,085.4 tpmC (transactions per minute), at a cost of $37.19/tpmC on the TPC-C benchmark. This result far exceeds the price/performance of previous eight-processor TPC-C benchmarks on RISC-based UNIX systems. "This result shows the kind of performance scaling that can be achieved with Intel-based 8-way servers, featuring the Pentium III Xeon processor," said Jerry Budelman, general manager of Intel's Server Component Division. "Intel-based servers deliver the best performance at the lowest price point for UNIX platforms and the best performance of any 8-way platform running Oracle applications. Intel offers and will continue to offer the platform of choice for UNIX transaction processing." "This record-breaking Oracle8i benchmark is the best any vendor has achieved on an 8-CPU, Intel Pentium III Xeon processor," said Ray Wong, vice president, Platform Technologies Division, Oracle Corp. "This benchmark result further demonstrates Oracle's continued leadership in the OLTP marketplace, and the unbeatable performance of the Oracle, SCO, Unisys and Intel combination." TPC-C is the most widely used industry standard benchmark representing online transaction processing (OLTP) simulating a high volume transaction customer scenario. It measures the maximum sustained system performance by assessing the number of new-order transaction per minute while the system simultaneously executes four other transaction types-payment, order-status, delivery and stock-level. "This confirms that the Intel based Unisys e-@ction ES2085R Enterprise Server combined with Oracle8i and UnixWare7, offers incredible customer value when compared to proprietary RISC based systems in this performance range. Now, just add Unisys high availability solutions to the mix and buying Intel based systems instead of RISC is an easy decision," said Don Johnson, who heads Enterprise Server Business at Unisys Systems and Technology. SCO is among the world's leading suppliers of Intel-based UNIX server operating systems. Oracle8i running on SCO's UnixWare 7, combine top technologies to bring high reliability and scalability to enterprise systems and to small to medium sized businesses. "SCO is excited about the results of the TPC-C Benchmark and the fact that it illustrates the power that UnixWare 7 brings to Intel IA-32 based systems," said John Bondi, vice president of Server Product Marketing at SCO. "The powerhouse combination of Unisys, Oracle, and UnixWare 7 gives our customers the ability to choose a highly reliable, cost effective and fast alternative to the traditional RISC-based database solutions. Availability All hardware and software used in the benchmarked configuration is expected to be available June 1, 2000.
