| Broadband Fixed-Wireless Market Expected to Soar to $7.4 Bln
Framingham, Massachusetts, Dec. 13 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. market for communications through so-called broadband fixed- wireless technology will soar to $7.4 billion in 2003 from $767 million this year, International Data Corp. estimated.

Broadband fixed-wireless technology is the use of digital microwave networks at customer sites to transmit voice, data and video to local and national fiber-optic networks. Companies marketing the technology include Teligent Inc., Nextlink Communications Inc. and Advanced Radio Telecom Corp.

Growth in Internet traffic is creating the need for faster transmission speed, IDC said. Another factor is the investment of more than $1.5 billion by MCI WorldCom Inc. in licenses for operating the microwave networks.

Over the next five years, small and medium-sized businesses will emerge as the primary market for services delivered through these technologies, IDC said.

Teligent offers dedicated Internet services over its SmartWave network. Advanced Radio Telecom is planning to install high-speed communications networks in 100 U.S. cities. Nextlink, a telephone company controlled by cellular entrepreneur Craig McCaw, is building fiber and broadband fixed-wireless networks.

 Nextlink rose 5 1/8 to 69 1/4 today. Teligent rose 11/16 to 62 1/2. Advanced Radio was unchanged at 13 3/4.
