Doug I hear that optoelectronics is the future almost daily
from one source or another. To make a long story short though
I think we are still in it's infancy. We are not just talking about shipping
a gazillion bits of voice-video - data around dark fiber at light speed which many can do now.
It appears to me that we also need to send these bits around

intelligently

to the correct address in the
shortest period of time and not just by trail and error at
lightning speed because that way sooner or later you'll
get bottle necks or crashes.

This is where ATM comes in I think, as an intelliget distributor.
Which is what Carriers are. ISPs on the other hand are just concerned
with the blind shoving of bits down a pipe, which I think is not as dificult.

I think it is in the Intelligent distribution of bits world wide that separates
ISPs, CLECs from big time Carriers. This is why CSCO has failed there so far.

There is much more I think to shipping bits fron Chicago to all capitals of the world
without bottle necks and dropped bits etc than meets the eye.
I think that is why Europeans have tended to choose NN which
better understands this. Europeans have a greater global orientation than the US.
CSCO has yet to make a dent world wide.
Looks to me like there are lots of little router
optical start ups bitting at CSCO's heels. he King may come
down soon in that aerea. Juniper has already moved into
their space. Who else is

This is certainly a simplistic way of looking at things
and I am certainly open to opinions from the great minds on
this thread,
