Monday said it had signed up more than one million customers for its free service since its introduction four months ago. AltaVista, in which Internet incubator CMGI Inc. owns a majority interest, said its current subscriber base has exceeded first-year growth expectations by 300 percent. The company offers a free Internet service that is supported by advertisements that appear on the user's screen. The ads can not be minimized, but they can be moved to the top or the bottom of the screen to lessen any distraction.
