LIBERATE'S INTERACTIVE TV SOFTWARE PLATFORM ENABLES DEVELOPERS TO Create Interactive TV Content With Industry-Standard Web Authoring Products LOS ANGELES, Dec 14, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Liberate Technologies (Nasdaq: LBRT) and Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) today announced they will integrate Macromedia's industry-leading Web authoring solutions, Dreamweaver and Flash, into Liberate's interactive TV software platform. Together, these powerful products allow interactive television to come alive for both developers and television viewers everywhere. Developers will be able to create dynamic content that results in ground-breaking TV-Web integration, such as "TV-like" interactive interfaces, rich-media advertisements, and online games. An integrated solution demonstrating the combined Flash and Liberate capabilities will be demonstrated at Western Cable, December 15-17, in Los Angeles. "The union of Flash and Dreamweaver with our products is a match made in content developer's heaven," said Charlie Tritschler, vice president of marketing, Liberate Technologies. "Our developers will now be able to create high-impact visual content that can reach beyond the Web into the living room without being restricted by bandwidth or proprietary authoring tools." Announced as part of Liberate's PopTV(TM) Program, the integration of these products will enable developers to provide content for the convergence of television with the Web. Liberate will create extensions to Dreamweaver, Macromedia's market-leading professional, visual Web authoring environment, to enable developers to easily produce content for display on televisions using the Liberate software solution. Liberate will also seamlessly integrate the Flash Player technology into all of its products for the cable and telco/ISP markets. Flash is the industry standard for high-impact, vector-based Web sites that deliver motion, sound, interactivity, and graphics. Flash integration will enable developers to produce content with the same production value and effects that consumers are accustomed to seeing on TV, as well as the immediate playback of the many Web sites that already incorporate Flash. Macromedia Flash is a natural fit for interactive set-top boxes. Flash graphics are compact and fast-loading, but are also resolution independent so they scale with no quality loss to any size TV. Liberate will ship a sample user-interface that incorporates Flash to licensees who will add their own branding and look-and-feel using Liberate and Macromedia developer tools. "With this partnership, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash developers will be able to take their expertise in Web design to the exciting new area of interactive TV," said Kevin Lynch, senior vice president and general manager for Macromedia. "The PopTV Program will enhance the television experience for viewers everywhere and Macromedia is proud to be working with Liberate to bring innovative and creative interactivity to the television market." "Liberate's decision to integrate Macromedia's Dreamweaver and Flash into their platform is great news for interactive television producers who want to take advantage of industry-standard authoring software as part of their interactive television programming," said Sam Barone, CTO of Mixed Signals Technologies, Inc.
