NDS Showcases End-to-End Digital Cable Solutions and Openness of VideoGuard-TM- Conditional Access At Western Show

NDS to Demo Joint Interactive TV Solutions With Microsoft TV, OpenTV, Liberate Technologies and Peach Networks; Security Solutions for TV and VOD On PCs, and More

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 1999-- NDS (Nasdaq/Easdaq: NNDS), a leader in conditional access and interactive solutions for digital television, is highlighting its end-to-end systems for digital cable and showcasing the openness of VideoGuard(TM) conditional access (CA) and smart card security solutions at the Western Show, December 14th-17th, booth No. 3041. The company is also demonstrating its Open VideoGuard CA and Point of Deployment (POD) removable security module, jointly developed with SCM Microsystems, at the CableNET exhibit which runs concurrent with the Western Show.

Components of NDS' end-to-end digital cable solution include Open VideoGuard conditional access, Provider(TM) customer care and billing system, StreamServer(TM) central information management and coordination system, an electronic program guide (EPG), middleware, and a smart cable modem. By providing a complete range of products, the NDS system is able to deliver a single, fully integrated solution that is scalable to customer requirements yet removes the problems, costs and delays associated with piecing together different components. Because NDS solutions are open and not proprietary, each component of the NDS digital cable solution can be integrated with systems created by third party vendors, allowing cable operators to custom build a solution that best suits their unique requirements.

NDS Open VideoGuard conditional access is being integrated with digital television solutions from a variety of partners and in different applications, illustrating that the company's conditional access is the most open solution currently available to the digital broadcasting industry. NDS CA can be seamlessly integrated with hardware and software from a range of vendors, and is designed to function as a powerful business enabling tool, which unlocks the door to the secure delivery of electronic information and entertainment content, providing a platform for additional interactive services, Internet delivery, TV-commerce opportunities and incremental revenue streams.

``The theme at NDS' Western Show exhibit this year is openness, flexibility and revenue-generating tools such as interactivity for broadcasters, whether they are delivering to TVs or PCs,' said Dr. Dov Rubin, NDS Americas Vice President and General Manager. ``NDS Open VideoGuard conditional access has been successfully integrated with more than 25 Set-Top Box (STB) vendors manufacturing over 235 STB models, seven subscriber management system (SMS) vendors, four digital compression solutions, five broadcast standards, and NDS will make its OpenCable-compliant POD available early next year.'

``In addition to conditional access, NDS offers security solutions that can be applied to both traditional TV and now PC applications, to help digital broadcasters capitalize on new business opportunities with PC users,' Dr. Rubin added.

Highlights of the NDS Western Show booth demos include:

NDS Open VideoGuard conditional access integrated with the set-top-box software and head-end components of systems using interactive TV applications from Microsoft TV, OpenTV, Liberate and Peach Networks. NDS will also showcase its CA interoperability in demonstrations with compression solutions from Divicom, Harmonic and TANDBERG Television.
Delivery of Video-on-Demand (VOD), movies with full VCR-like control, to PC's via a cable modem -- combining Vsoft's VideoClick software for Video-on-Demand, GADline's CyberMode-S cable modem with a built in Smart Card Reader and NDS smart card technology, which gives viewers the standard features of Open VideoGuard conditional access and CastGear(TM) secure IP multicast solutions.
NDS' POD, jointly developed with SCM Microsystems Inc., for OpenCable(TM)-compliant removable and renewable security solutions for digital TV services delivered over cable networks.

XTV(TM), an extended ``TV Anytime' solutions protecting content. Unlike Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) such as TiVo or Replay, XTV is not a CE device but rather is a software solution that can be integrated in parallel into a broadcaster's existing environment and STB. XTV can build on and extend that environment to provide added value to the viewer while leaving the broadcaster in control of the content and ultimately create new revenue streams.
Value@TV real-time interactive applications, such as BSkyB's Sky Sports Active, which brings interactive sports to the home viewer with a wide range of camera angles and information on-demand options.
