NDS and Liberate Enter Into a Development and Marketing Agreement for Interactive and Enhanced Digital TV Platforms

NDS & Liberate Co-operate To Provide Broadcasters And Their Viewers With The Next Generation Of Infrastructure And Applications For Interactive Digital Television

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 1999-- NDS (Nasdaq/Easdaq: NNDS), a leader in conditional access and interactive solutions for digital television, and Liberate Technologies (Nasdaq: LBRT - news), a leading software provider for delivering enhanced television content to set-tops and other information appliances, have agreed to develop and market solutions integrating the NDS conditional access systems with the Liberate digital television platform for interactive TV. NDS and Liberate aim to provide broadcasters, MSOs and their viewers with this leading technology for interactive television applications.

The two companies have already been working together to integrate NDS' Open VideoGuard(TM) conditional access software and POD technology with Liberate TV Navigator(TM) client software, Liberate Connect DTV Suite server software, and Liberate TV Info Server software.

NDS' Open VideoGuard(TM) conditional access enables a broadcaster or MSO to support a full range of interactivity and secure e-commerce. Conditional access also provides security and access management protecting valuable content, keeps network revenues flowing and ensures that viewers only watch or purchase what they pay for.

The integrated Liberate, NDS solution also offers the following benefits to networks and cable operators:

Enables broadcasters and MSOs to provide their viewers with the next generation of interactive television applications.
Simplifies TV-oriented application development by using a hardware platform-agnostic architecture.
Creates an open, standards-based, interoperable and future proof solution that provides broadcasters with solutions that best meet their needs.
-- Adaptable to different TV operator business models.

''Together NDS and Liberate are driving the demand for new services that will enrich TV viewers' experiences and provide broadcasters with new revenue streams,'' said Dr. Abe Peled, Chief Executive Officer of NDS. ''To meet current viewers' demand, gain additional viewership and increase revenue through digital television, broadcasters and cable operators need to identify their individual needs and then integrate and seamlessly deliver interactive services.''

''Liberate's partnership with NDS demonstrates our commitment to offering the most valuable and complete interactive TV solution available,'' said Mitchell Kertzman, president and CEO of Liberate Technologies. ''NDS' Open VideoGuard conditional access will be easily integrated into Liberate's flexible software platform offering our customers yet another feature from which to choose to bring additional value to their interactive TV service offerings.''
