Telecomguy,

The large PTT's and Carriers have an installed base and a revenue stream they need to consider. The start-up's don't and therefore they can be lighter on their feet and introduce new services that the carriers might take a touch longer to deploy. If a carrier were to buy a company deploying such industry leading services they would buy them for that very reason. (I noticed you didn't address my question as to why a carrier would buy a start-up. "Because they can is not an answer.) That being the case the carrier is likely (more than not) to allow that start-up to continue doing what made them great....continue to build out of next generation networks.

I think the flaw in your reaonsing is assuming that carriers and PTT's will buy the start-ups and make them stop what made them great - building out next generation networks - or even forcing them to alter infrastructure direction. I don't think that will happen because doing so would slow deployment and market share is the name of the game right now.

Two last points, there will likely be some consolidation but anti-trust laws will keep this to a minimum. And the MSO's will take some signficant share by delivering unique serives on cable. Those archtiectures are not owned by the PTT's - although T has bought much of th ecable infrastructure...they are still deploying next generation technologies not PTT-like infrastrucutre.
